Fiber Optic Characterization (FOC)

MF Lightwave Certified Fiber Optic Characterization (FOC) services ensure the integrity of your underlying fiber network. With thorough capture and evaluation of its physical properties, such as; optical attenuation, reflectance/scatter, and dispersion, you ensure every capital and operational decision for network growth is accurate and properly leveraged for future technologies.

In addition to providing valuable wavelength, equipment choice, and capacity threshold information, fiber characterization will help you identify life expectancy and potential issues that could lead to service interruptions and loss of revenue.

Ensuring Optimal Performance

MFL’s fiber characterization service allows customers to determine the performance capabilities of their fiber networks. Our technicians complete a span analysis and generate all data required for network operators to maximize utilization of network fiber. MFL deploys our technicians and equipment internationally.

Our technicians will test your fiber and provide a comprehensive final report with detailed test results and recommendations.

MFL performs the following FOC services:

  • Bi-directional Continuity: Determines total link loss data between two network nodes. The tests are completed in both directions as specified.
  • Span Characteristics – Attenuation Profile: Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) is used to determine span lengths and splice losses with reflectivity and total loss at each ITU grid frequency in the C and L band.
  • Dispersion and Fiber Type: Chromatic dispersion modules are used to determine the amount of compensation needed to allow for 10g+ data rates. Chromatic Dispersion testing also identifies the fiber type.
  • Polarization and Orientation: Tests the fiber for physical disorders such as stress, jitter, twists, bends and signal variances.
